Cuillin Ridge

It all started with a trip to the Isle of Skye on the way to Ullapool, where I was to take part in a 5 day workshop with Lucy May Schofield, making a scroll…

The captivating landscape had to be the inspiration! I have wanted to try and climb the Black Cuillin Ridge line for years. Short of that objective, with no climbing partners, sketching the views from different vantage points was the next best thing. I could linger and feel the landscape. The inspiration for the colour came from the many rocks that have the iron deposits etched onto the grey rock and are scattered on the approach from the Glenbrittle camp site towards the Rotten Gully.

The paper has some personal history too. In April 2024, I have been lucky enough to participate in the International Mokuhanga Conference in Echizen, Japan, famous for the paper making mills. The paper was made by me with the help of the artisan paper makers. The marks and folds are the sign of my unskilled hands trying to build very fine layers of kozo fibers into a sheet of washi paper. I love how it adds the depth and texture to these prints.
